Here is our animatic, with stereotypical crime caper soundtrack!




hey it's Sam here, i just thought i'd give our valued readers a run down of this here animatic. the first scene is an apple, a very still shot, with some kind of tranquil music, (i'm sure we will add another post discussing this), then it would be snatched away very quickly and the music will start (i think we've decided on Long Arms by Esser). then all the other frames drawn until the second still apple shot are where we have the different characters introduced. the second apple is then snatched away revealing the films title, "scrump" underneath. another quick idea, we could maybe then have the ensemble cast walking away happily, a job well done, but that could give the idea of a finished film, which we don't want. just an idea.

After thinking of many titles, we decided to go for a simple, yet effective, title: SCRUMP

Some ideas for the opening scene!

We were thinking of taking the idea from train spotting, and having some people running from an orchard after scrumping or maybe caught in the act. We were thinking of maybe hiving some kind of old decrepit farmer who keeps turning up with the runners. It also may have the camera stop[ping over each individual and giving them a synopsis of their roles and nicknames in the clan, or whatever its called. This is a typical caper style and should make the genre obvious, we would have an sub serious soundtrack to go along with the chase scene with maybe some diagetic sounds of panting and feet on the ground, or anything like this. We were thinking also of having some classical music for the first few shots of the orchard then comeing in with the main soundtrack when the chase starts.

JJ's Ideas!

Sams idea of the stereo typical caper opening was one i was thinking of myself, as its easily identifyable as a caper.
But also i was thinking maybe close up's of teens walking down a sreet in slow motion, the "leader" throwing an aple in the air and catching it, then zooming into their faces, and giving their names and part in the gang. An establishing shot could be used too.

Also i was thinking of a chase scene, including an old farmer who keeps reapearing everywhere the scrumper runs, to add comedic style. For example he starts at the farm and the farmer calls from the window so the scrumper runs to get into his car and the farmers in the seat next to him ect.

Lastly i thought about it coming in on a town centre area with a stall that the scrumpers sell their apples at, and a woman aproaches and says they look just like the ones from her back garden, and an unsure seller embarks on some sort of comedic argument with the woman (this we'd have to develop) and it would end in a chase scene or something along those lines.

Rather vaque ideas i know, but they can be developed when one is decided on.

Interrigation room, police questioning a young lad about a seemingly very serious crime, then we find out the crime is scrumping. White text will come in over blank black screens, very serious music.

Group of teens running, apparently being chased, from a "scrump". Pauses on each characters faces, with information, stereotypical crime caper style.

Alices Opening Analysis




Donnie Darko

The opening of Donnie Darko begins with credits in a contrasting Gothic white writing laid on a dark gloomy black background.Accompanied by these credits is the sound of thunder rumbling, which sets an uneasy and unsettling sensation/mood on the audience.This already hints to the genre of the movie, obviously no comedy.A dark shadowy establishing shot sets the scene of mountains which leads to the road,making the audience ask questions where does this road lead to, and slowly making the audience more involved.The Camera then focus' on a main shot slowly zooming towards the person on the floor in the middle of the road.The shots are naturalistic,staying with the slow theme unfolding slowly more details and more questions.A point of view gives the feeling of haziness and wonder that maybe this person feels waking up in the middle of the road,almost as if still dreaming.

To start with the film productions logo is put up with non diagetic sound of sirens, so we already have an idea what the film will be about. This scene starts with an establishing shot of Sergeant Nicolas angel walking down a corridor, which looks like a very formal building. Of course as he's walking we don't know he's a sargeant, we discover this when hes right by the camera. So there's almost a sense of tension as the diagetic sound of his footsteps are the only thing to be heard.
Whilst this is happening more companies who were in associate with producing the film flash up at the bottom of the screen.
Then when Nicolas angel gets to the camera, there is an extreme closeup of his badge, and the non diagetic sound of a narrator comes in telling us about the sergeant, and his background. This voice continues through out the opening scene, and following each narration is a clip. Another non diagetic sound track cuts in under the narration as well to give of he feeling of the crime caper, as the music isnt exactly serious with big band instruments, playing small licks. And the mismatch between the action and the track gives of the comedic value of the opening.
As the scene continues on diagetic sound is added in, like the pen clicking for when he's done his exams, and this is to help the watcher get the feel of what he's doin or has achieved. A sound easy to relate to.
Through out the opener there are following pan shots and tracking shots of the sergeant as he makes his way through the police station, the diagetic and mise en scene give us a feel here of the surroundings, the mise en scene being the location in a big posh building with office props around, and of course people occupying them.
The shots of the action are very quickly edited and have fast transitions to give off the energetic feel and to get the audience to relate to the upbeat lifestyle of an officer, it has point of view shots from the sergeants prospective to show the audience, how upbeat the job is and fast paced.
It uses different length shots throughout also, switching quickly between distances, again to relate to the upbeat and fast pace atmosphere.

This opener gives us a feel of the upbeat life the officers have, but also the comical side, with the diagetic voice, and the sound track. Maybe a technique we could use if we were to make a crime caper.

The opening sequence starts with the logos of the production companies (Warner bros. and legendary pictures) and the creators of the batman comics/franchise (DC Comics) all of which are blue to follow the colour scheme of the film. It then follows into a small scene which feature the screen completely covered in blue flame(again to follow the films colour scheme), the flames rise towards the audience a black figure appears which looks like a batman which introduces the film in a minimalist but affective way. The film then starts with the camera panning towards a building that holds 2 of the jokers henchmen that blow one of the windows so that they can zip wire to the top of the building across from them. Both of these henchmen feature "joker" masks this is yet another simple yet affective way to introduce something within this film but in this case its used to show that whatever these henchmen are doing its something to do with the joker this also leaves them unidentifiable so when they all kill each other during the bank robbery you cant link a face to the man being killed so its as if the masks dehumanises them and you then dont mind that they're being killed.

Sin City Opening Analysis

The opening scene of the thriller/detective noir film Sin City is very simple, but the beautiful effects make it seem so smooth and give it a very stylish feel. A man comes up behind a woman and seduces her, then kills/assassinates her. Everything is in black and white apart from the woman's red dress and lipstick, and for one brief moment her green eyes. This style carries on throughout the whole film.

The sound in this scene is very subtle, but adds to the film noir feel. There is some soft ambient jazz playing, very romantic music, almost sexual, and very little background noise. The sound of the gunshot is loud enough to make audiences jump, but still quiet enough to realise it was a silenced pistol. The non-diagetic voice over of the man jumps to diagetic conversation so quickly that it seems he could've almost been saying the voice over out loud behind her. It reverts back to a voice-over as the woman dies.

The mise-en-scene is, to put it simply, black and white. This is all it needs to be the give the film its character. The lighting is natural but dark, as are all the props.

The costume is very simple and bland, all apart from the woman's red dress and lipstick that set her apart from everything else in the scene. This makes you realise that she is special in some way.

The zoom out at the end of the sequence is good, because it happens straight after the man kills the woman. This action leaves the audience stunned, and thinking that everything is not as it seems. Thus zooming out and showing the whole city would leave audiences thinking that this idea applies to the whole city, the whole movie.

Logo Analysis

Warner Brothers is a traditional Logo.It comes across as simple and not to intruding,yet it is one of the most accomplished companies. The colours give connotations of simplicity and purity ,it is not to dramatic.The gold outstanding, traditional WB ,reflects their entertainment business, classic.The pure sky and gold writing reminds the audience of the golden gates in the sky, taking you to new wonders, gives what this logo contains, many things it could open up to, just like the company explores many genres.However, the logo comes across as quite a family logo.As the logo is Warner Brothers a family name and company itself.The tune is like a short twinkle it is not to bold and extreme, keeps simple and tranquil.Overall the logo is short, it is a glimpse, maybe a reminder to the audience.

Our Logo,

its a simple yet memorable logo that will leave a lasting impact on the viewers mind with the use of the sound bytes. the use of the sound bytes is also a way for the logo to link in with the film it has produced as it can use sounds that are featured in the film.

Analysis of production company logo.

This is a simple yet affective idea much like many other production company logos. This leaves you knowing who has produced the program/film you are about to watch without your mind focusing on it to much. The use of the childs voice is also quite affective as this contrasts with the dark logo and also adds a almost humorous side to it.

Ok so this logo obviously belongs to new line cinema, and it is quite simple, being just a box with some ladder looking objects flying around and finally connecting to the box. And by that point we know it relates to a film real, so even though the logo is simple I think its quite widely recognised, and when it comes down to it the more simple the logo the more easily recognised the film company become, as the logo is easy to remember. I think we’ve interpreted this into out logo, by keeping it quite simple its easily remembered

1. A supernatural thriller with a strong female lead.

Info: Social realism in films is representative of real life, with all its difficulties. The stories and people portrayed are everyday characters, usually from working class backgrounds. Typically, films within the social realist canon are gritty, urban dramas about the struggle to survive the daily grind.

There is often a nemesis who must be thwarted: either a figure of authority or a former partner who turned on the group or one of its members.
